Pavan Kanumalla
Co-founder & Developer
Pavan is the developer and co-founder of SurgiChat. Originally from Orlando, he studied Kinesiology at The University of Texas at Austin, where he combined his interests in human performance, injury prevention, and patient communication. His experience spans medical clinics and elite athletic environments, including working with Texas Football, Texas Swim & Dive, and the Seattle Seahawks' sports medicine and performance staffs.
After seeing how often patients feel confused or overwhelmed by surgical instructions, he set out to build tools that make healthcare more understandable. Now an incoming medical student, Pavan uses his background in biomechanics, athletic training, and clinical care to create AI-powered education that is simple, accurate, and tailored to each procedure. SurgiChat reflects his belief that better knowledge leads to better recovery and that every patient deserves clarity, not guesswork.

Dr. Robert Purchase
Co-founder & Chief of Medical Operations
Dr. Purchase's philosophy of care is anchored in his belief that a well-informed patient is the best patient. His primary role is to serve as an advisor to his patients. This allows the patient to be an active participant in their care. To facilitate this process, Dr. Purchase explores unique techniques to continue the informative process of the office visit by using email, participating in social media, and creating original internet content. This has led to the creation of Surgichat, a focused, AI-powered patient-centric education tool to help patients participate in their surgical experience.
Dr. Purchase was born in Western Pennsylvania and remained there to attend Washington and Jefferson College. It was during this time, as a collegiate football player and biology major, that he became interested in orthopedic surgery. He attended Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA and stayed at Temple to complete his orthopedic residency. Temple's orthopedic program provided a great mix of clinical and academic experiences and has a history of producing the top orthopedic surgeons. He supplemented his orthopedic residency with a sports medicine and shoulder surgery fellowship in San Francisco. After completing his fellowship with San Francisco's best shoulder and sports medicine doctors, he has developed an orthopedic practice in San Francisco and Marin County with a subspecialty in the care of shoulder and knee problems.
